This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: SCOPE OF ASSIGNED DUTIES: Provide resident supervision and clinical instruction in the operating room, outpatient clinic and inpatient settings. Attend, participate and supervise residents/students in outpatient clinics and take an active role in the evaluation of the patient, decision for treatment/care, and documentation in the patient electronic records. Follows the VA Guidelines established for resident supervision, including those documentation requirements in the electronic patient healthcare record. Conduct postoperative follow-up. Accompany the patient to the PACU assuring that the patient's condition is optimal. If admitted, visit in-house patient within 24-48 hours following anesthesia to assess post-surgical recovery. Supervise Residents/students in clinical instruction and the performance of any bedside procedures appropriate to their level of graduate responsibility. Participate in call coverage to advise and supervise residents. Call response time of 15 minutes by phone and 60 minutes in person is expected. at VAMC Cincinnati. This includes nights, weekends, and holiday hours. Maintains professional competency, courtesy, and flexibility to provide the necessary services of this specialty. Provide regional level specialty support to VA facilities located in South-central Ohio through such means as tele-medicine and referral-based consultations and treatment. Meet annual and mandatory training requirements that are specific to the Veterans Healthcare Administration. To support graduate medical education, the surgeon must be competitive for faculty appointment in the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Cincinnati. in May be assigned to committee membership to represent the surgical service or the hospital medical staff, and actively participate in carrying out assignments by that committee. The surgeon must be able to function as an independent clinical provider. Initiative, diplomacy, and confidentiality are employed when dealing with patients, staff, and trainees. Procedures required include but not limited to: Endovascular stenting (example: stenting of abdominal aortic aneurysm), Fem-pop bypass grafting, Carotid enterectomy, A-V fistula, Peripheral angiogram and angioplasty, Open AAA repair. Preferred Experience: Board eligibility. or certification in Vascular Surgery. Demonstrated expertise in the performance of endovascular procedures Minimum seven years of independent practice experience in Orthopedic Surgery. Physical Requirements: Long periods of standing or walking in the operating room setting and outpatient clinic will be encountered. The surgeon may be required to return to the facility after the administrative workday and on weekends to fulfill the requirements associated with on-call coverage and resident supervision. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes-fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer, intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes-noisy environment. The facility has also developed a multidisciplinary team committed to the use of advance techniques for the salvage of extremities threatened by Diabetic Foot Disease. Participation in this initiative is a major element of the vascular surgery practice at this facility. The Vascular Surgeon will work as part of a team consisting of CRNAs, RNSAs, Anesthesiologists, O.R. personnel, and other staff supporting. providing direct surgical care to inpatient and outpatients. He/she will assist in the clinical education of surgical residents and students. The vascular surgeon will have opportunities to and pursue research opportunities if available or desired Practice elements will include the full range of adult vascular surgery, including inpatient management, outpatient clinic care and telemedicine within VA referral sites throughout South­central Ohio. The vascular surgeon reports directly to the Chief of the specialty section, or the Chief of Surgery in matters related to the clinical supervision of students/residents and for all other matters relative to carrying out the responsibilities listed above.
