This Medical Technician position will serve as a Phlebotomist and Hematology Bone Marrow Assistant aligned in Pathology and Medical Laboratory Service located at the Veterans Healthcare System in Ann Arbor, MI. ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following: Performs venipuncture procedures and blood culture collection utilizing sterile field techniques during ward rounds at specified times. Venipuncture procedures performed on the wards involve drawing blood from a patient in various states, such as the comatose, disabled, sedated, patients in traction, who may have possible other complicating conditions. Difficult draws and use of specialized collection techniques are a common occurrence; Ensures precise identification of patients by following designated three tier identification protocol; Utilizes a computer system to build blood drawing collection list; Receives and appropriately handles urine specimens collected at the time blood is drawn; Assists during bone marrow biopsy procedure; Utilizes sterile field techniques; Explains procedures to patients and answer questions pertaining to procedure; Informs patients of potential risks involved in certain procedures and monitors patient for changes in condition; Maintain supplies for venipuncture/blood drawing, and supplies used for bone marrow procedures; Follows the laboratories' protocol in preparing and packaging specimens; Performs other related duties as assigned; Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, (12:00pm - 8:00pm) Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Financial Disclosure Report: Not Required DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
